Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ) is the name given to any number of misalignment issues with your temporomandibular joint. TMD can be painless and unnoticeable to the naked eye, and therefore often goes undiagnosed. Unfortunately, undiagnosed TMD can lead to long-term dental issues. Signs of TMJ/TMD

TMD may not cause any pain, but can be recognized through signs such as:

• Uneven wear of the top of teeth
• Facial asymmetry
• Downward angled jaw
• Speech abnormalities
• Insomnia

• Chronic headaches or migraines
• Back and neck aches
• Painful or swollen jaw
• Clicking or popping in the jaw
• Limited jaw mobility or complete lockjaw

How TMJ/TMD is Diagnosed

TMD symptoms are often similar to the symptoms of other medical and dental disorders. Because of this, TMD can be difficult to diagnose. To rule out other medical disorders, Dr. Miller may need your complete medical history. He will need to perform a thorough oral examination that may include x-rays or an MRI, and may require a cast of your jaw to determine if your symptoms are caused by TMD.
