TMJ Symptoms

TMJ, temporomandibular joint disorder, is one of the most frequently misdiagnosed conditions because symptoms and signs of TMJ can seem entirely unrelated to your jaw. Sacramento TMJ dentist, Dr. David Miller, will thoroughly evaluate your jaw joint during your biannual visits. However, if you suffer from any of the following symptoms, you should schedule an appointment to have your jaw inspected right away.

Symptoms of TMJ that May Seem Unrelated

Symptoms of TMJ can include eye problems such as:

  • Blurry vision
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Pressure behind the eyes

TMJ symptoms in the ears include:

  • Hissing or ringing in the ears
  • Ear pain without infection
  • Stuffy ears
  • Vertigo and dizziness

TMJ may also manifest head, neck, and facial pain such as:

  • Chronic migraine, tension, or sinus headaches
  • Scalp sensitivity
  • Neck pain and postural problems
  • Sore muscles around the jaw

Symptoms that Indicate TMJ in or Around the Jaw

TMJ may also show symptoms in and around the jaw including:

  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Limited jaw mobility or complete lockjaw
  • Pain in or around the jaw
  • Teeth grinding
  • Increased tooth sensitivity

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should contact neuromuscular dentist, Dr. David Miller, as soon as possible to have your TMJ evaluated. The sooner a diagnosis can be made, the faster and more effective your treatment options will be.
