Am I at Risk for Sleep Apnea?

It is estimated that around 12 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a condition in which breath ceases for several seconds, multiple times a night. Sleep apnea is caused by an obstruction of the airways when you are lying down. While it can affect anyone, there are several factors that may increase your risk for this disorder. During your regularly scheduled visits with Dr. Miller, he can discuss these risks with you and help you determine if sleep apnea treatment can help restore a restful night’s sleep.

Men are more likely to develop sleep apnea earlier, but it can affect men and women equally after the age of 65. In addition to age and sex, risk factors for sleep apnea include:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Being overweight
  • Prolonged sitting
  • High blood pressure

Sleep apnea may also be caused by genetic factors such as having a large neck, a narrow airway, or a family history of the disorder. If you are suffering from symptoms of sleep apnea such as snoring, daytime sleepiness, or extreme mood swings, Dr. Miller can help you determine if sleep apnea is the culprit and customize the sleep apnea treatment option that will best meet your needs.

If you live in or around Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, or Modesto, California and have questions about your risk for sleep apnea, please contact Advanced Dental Concepts to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Miller today.
